I went back to our shelter, where Dracon had woken up and was stretching his arms and legs to get ready. I went off to get his water, walking all the way to the mountain stream to avoid the filthy river.

When I returned, I found myself gasping and dropping the waterskin.

Dracon was lying on his back and groaning. He was flushing red, and there were chunks of half-chewed bread all around him. I ran over and smelled an unmistakable whiff of vomit.

Dracon was ill. He’d been preparing for this day for four years, and now that it had arrived, he was too sick to even move.
